A Chinese rug is created in different shapes and sizes, based on the size and shape of the area where you would like to place the rug. The edgings of Chinese rugs generally do not touch the walls of the room. A meter’s distance is kept between the wall and the edgings of the rug.

The illustration done in Chinese rugs denotes the display of patterns on a rug. The pattern can be either simple or complex shaped. Generally there are 3 kinds of designs – one-sided, medallion and all over. In the ‘all over’ design, a central pattern is placed but this center motif is used repeatedly all the way through the complete rug. In the medallion design, there is a central point or some sort of a big showpiece in the design. In the one-side design, the pattern on the rug is not essentially symmetrical vertically.

Chinese rugs can be found in various colors. A contrast of colors is used for the main design and the borders in order to make the rugs look more beautiful. Although the borders of the rugs are not as prominent as the background, however if you take a closer look, you can notice that the borders have a great deal of detailing done on them too. The central design is of course a lot more prominent because after all, it is the focal point of the rug.

Some of the patterns that are used for making silk Chinese rugs are pictorial and curvilinear. Those patters that are created using curved lines are knows as curvilinear and are mainly used in all-over and medallion designs. Pictorial silk Chinese rugs depict animals, people, scenes from Chinese literature, historical scenes, and battle or hunting scenes.

Mostly Persian and Chinese styles, or else a combo of both of them are used for making Chinese rugs. If you are planning to buy a Chinese rug, bear in mind that various Chinese symbols have various meanings. A motif of clouds is a symbol of a wish. Fish stands for abundance. Butterflies denote happy marriage and luck. A lotus stands for purity.
